Preventive Maintenance Mechanic I

This position performs preventive maintenance services and repairs to automotive, heavy equipment and other diesel or gasoline engine driven equipment as assigned. Must have own tools from ¼ to 1inch, in wrenches and socket sets. Follows directions and reports to Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Road & Bridge Supervisor.  Works a forty (40) hour week.  May require overtime and holidays.

 

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled preventive maintenance services to include change of fluids in crank cases, brake systems, transmissions (manual and automatic) differentials, cooling systems and power assisted steering systems, lubrication/fuel service truck.
  • Changes air intake, hydraulic, fuel and oil filters on a scheduled and non-scheduled basis.
  • Lubricates chassis, steering and articulating systems on construction and automotive equipment.
  • Changes tires, hoses, belts and electrical components as directed by the Equipment Mechanic.
  • Answers emergency road calls, drives trucks, assists in the retrieval of disabled vehicles and equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains shop repair orders and vehicle historical data.
  • Maintains the repair shop in a clean and orderly manner, washes and steam cleans automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Performs minor tasks using ARC and acetylene gas welding/cutting equipment.
  • Performs air and hydraulic and brake repair/replacement on heavy and light vehicles.
  • Assists the Heavy Equipment Mechanic as requested.
  • Required to complete all written documentation related to the job function.
  • Maintains the ability to operate in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

This position requires graduation from high school or a General Equivalency Diploma unless exempt as provided under Article 25.9.  At least one (1) year of experience in preventive maintenance. Possession of a valid Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with no restriction for air brake, and must possess tanker and hazardous material endorsement prior to application.

 

The hourly rate for this position is $18.8425. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
