Catalogs all print, non-print and electronic Library materials for the Nassau County Public Library System.  Performs related work as assigned. This position is not assigned by building or particular location and requires the flexibility to work at various library branches as assigned.  Requires evening and weekend work.

  • Receives all library materials, to include signing for all library materials shipments, unpacking materials from shipping containers and comparing packing lists with shipped items.
  • Prepares all library materials for cataloging including donations, by entering each item into library ILS.
  • Locates material records, edits and imports records into library bibliographic database.
  • Edits library records according to national library standards, using appropriate cataloging reference tools, such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2 (AACR2), Machine Readable Cataloging 21 (MARC21) and RDA Cataloging Rules.
  • Creates call numbers for all library materials using the latest edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
  • Assigns subject headings, as needed, for all material records using the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
  • Assigns authority headings using Ohio College Library Center (OCLC) data files.
  • Creates original cataloging records for library materials as needed.
  • Processes all materials for library shelves including, but not limited to, printing spine labels, security tags, attaching genre labels and mylar covers, applying barcodes, placing property stamps and labels and repacking if necessary.
  • Communicates with vendors and jobbers in a variety of ways concerning material issues such as, but limited to: duplicates, damaged materials, replacement of worn materials and packaging, shipment of incorrect materials, etc.
  • Distributes all cataloged and shelf ready items to Library branches.
  • Returns items to vendors as required.
  • Assigns tasks to and supervises the work of assigned volunteers.
  • Answers Library patrons’ reference questions; assists patrons in using various resources and equipment of the Library, including the internet; interprets Library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Assists with developing records and circulation policies for new library genre such as Playaways, Lauchpads, etc.
  • Assists with training of new staff and volunteers.
  • Sorts donated books and other items for library use or sale by FOL Group.
  • Keeps track of cataloging supplies and submits orders for approval.
  • Assists with reports for library statistics.
  • Maintains Library database to include inventory.
  • Assists with test proctoring.
  • Maintains County-wide training instructions for cataloging related procedures.
  • Performs circulation duties as needed.
  • Attends staff meetings.
  • Attends meetings, training, conferences and workshops to maintain knowledge of current theories and practice in public Library operations and technology.
  • Prepares and submits required reports.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, County employees, Library patrons, volunteers, students, community service workers, vendors and the general public.
  • Performs a variety of routine office duties as required, which may include but are not limited to typing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, etc.
  • Runs errands as needed.
  • Operates a variety of equipment, which may include a scanner, microfilm reader, security equipment, computer, printer, typewriter, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone, etc.
  • Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness.  Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave request.
  • Performs related duties as required.

This position requires a Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science supplemented by five (5) to eleven (11) months of experience in library cataloging.  Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.

The range for this position is $20.0376 - $30.4899. The County provides a comprehensive benefits program and participates in the Florida Retirement System (FRS) and has a 3% employee contribution requirement.
